World Ranger Day – Celebrating the unsung heroes

On the 31st July every year we celebrate World Ranger Day. This allows people across the globe the opportunity to applaud the work rangers do. Every day they are protecting the planet’s natural treasures and cultural heritage for us.

This year we pay special tribute to our rangers, the men and women who put their lives on the line everyday while patrolling and protecting the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve

Our Rangers

The Timbavati employs only the strongest, best-trained and dedicated men and women, all of whom have passed the most stringent selection process. They are equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment and are not only skilled, but also who firmly believe in the cause they are fighting for.

These rangers spend their days and nights patrolling and protecting the large tract of natural bush we know as the Timbavati, stretching some 40km north to south, and 24km east to west. There is no 9 to 5 in this field of work, long hot days or dark cold nights, shifts last 12 hours and these brave individuals never know what lies ahead when they start work. This dedicated team are committed to ensuring that all the animal and plant species in this vast area are protected from the ever increasing demand for natural products.

We can proudly say that they have been unbelievably successful in the fight against rhino poachers over the past few years.

Watch this video to see how dedicated these rangers are too what they do and the animals they protect.

How can you help?

The Timbavati Wildlife Protection Programme’s anti-rhino poaching initiative is focused on effectively detecting and deterring incursions and relies on donations for field ranger equipment and training. Should you wish to support this initiative please visit the Timbavati website.
