Our Rising Star, Risuna

My name is Risuna Mathebula and I have been working at Tanda Tula for seven and a half years. This is my story….

“In 2014, I had a brief but important experience working as a housekeeper. My mother, Lindiwe, was also a housekeeper, but she had to take maternity leave. I stepped into her position for five months, determined to help support our family during that time. It wasn’t something I planned for, but it was a duty I took on with pride.

Two years later, in 2017, after spending some time at home feeling frustrated and unsure of my next steps, I knew I needed to do something different. My mother called Hayley, someone she knew would always offer to help, to ask if I could come and train as a temporary worker. I was eager to learn new skills, grow, and find a sense of purpose. I started working in housekeeping and the scullery, grateful for the opportunity to get back on my feet.

In 2019, my efforts paid off when I was made permanent in a waitressing role. It was a big step forward, though I occasionally still helped out in housekeeping. Then, in 2021, a new door opened for me—I was given the chance to become a bartender. Each new role came with its own challenges, but I embraced them, knowing I was growing both professionally and personally.

At the beginning of this year, I received one of the biggest opportunities of my life: the chance to work in the office, with the incredible support of the managers and owners. It has been a life-changing experience. I can’t even put into words how happy I am every day. I’m constantly learning, experiencing new things, and taking on responsibilities I never imagined. I love what I do—it doesn’t feel like just a job; it feels like spending time with family. My colleagues and superiors make me feel valued and appreciated, like we are all part of something bigger together.

As a mother of two children, my greatest wish is for them to go to school and never be lazy. I didn’t have the knowledge or guidance on what to do after school, but I want to ensure my children have the tools and people to help them achieve a bright future—even brighter than mine.

This place has become so much more than just a workplace for me. It’s a home. I never feel lost here. My colleagues, my mentors—we are all one family, and that makes all the difference.

I’ve always dreamed of traveling the world. One day, I hope to see New York and the Statue of Liberty. It’s a dream I hold onto, and maybe, just maybe, it’ll come true.
