Premier Classe service to be resumed
PARLIAMENT – Cope MP, Nick Koornhof, recently submitted a question to the Minister of Transport, Sibusiso Joel Ndebele, regarding the possible reinstatement of the Shosholoza Meyl Premier Classe train service – a purple luxury train that travelled from Pretoria to Nelspruit and Hoedspruit.
The initial service was terminated due to low passenger numbers and locomotive shortages. On August 10 the minister answered that the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) intends to resume the Premier Classe service to both Nelspruit and Hoedspruit through a re-organised business process.
After the suspension of the service, PRASA carried out marketing and financial feasibility studies on these routes, and came to the conclusion that a joint effort, implemented by PRASA and the tourism authorities concerned, would open new opportunities, including lower costs and joint marketing campaigns. This prospective relationship is bound to ensure the sustainability of these routes in socio- economic terms, said the minister.
The minister further said that PRASA is currently progressing with regard to the strategic rail partnerships with the provinces of Mpumalanga and Limpopo, and anticipates a resumption of service in the last quarter of this year. Private charters are currently being offered on these routes.
One of the duties of a member of parliament (MP) is to look over his/her portfolio by visits to institutions, or as in this case, by putting forward questions and motions through the speaker to the relevant minister.
