Being close to an adult elephant, of any size, is a special experience, but there are a few large elephant bulls who truly stand out above the rest. If you are fortunate enough to come across an exceptionally large bull, you cannot help but be in complete awe.
Our guests had one such experience this week when they came across Mac, one of a few remaining large tusked bulls in Africa. Each year Mac travels vast distances and has a home range much larger than other elephants in the APNR (Associated Private Nature Reserves).
He has now returned to the Timbavati, much to the excitement of everyone in the reserve. A tracking collar was carefully fitted to Mac in 2002 by Save the Elephants South Africa, and he forms part of their research project.
