Weaving Magic

There are many faces at Tanda Tula that guests do not always see - the staff who work behind the scenes.

One such person is Goodness Mashego, a lovely lady working as a scullery, and she has a hidden talent. Taught form a young age by her mother, Goodness weaves the most beautiful mats in the traditional Shangaan manner. Weaving is traditionally a woman’s job, but in today’s modern world many of these skills are being lost as technology takes over.

Using a wooden frame, some string tied to rocks and grass reeds she can make intricate and delicate floor mats, often incorporating plastic bags or chip packets to add colour and variety.

This is a very special art and we are proud that the tradition carries on. She is often seen teaching some of the younger women how to do this complex weaving.
