The Gift of An Elephant: A story about life, love and Tanda Tula!

Canadian Jacquie Gauthier has been a lot of things in her life; radio and television personality, playwright, politician and now author. But she says the best job she’s ever had was as a volunteer in the adult literacy program at Tanda Tula. The experiences she had over the nearly three years she spent working with the Tanda Tula staff feature prominently in her debut book, The Gift of an Elephant.

Jacquie recently returned to camp with journalist Dianne Tipping-Woods for an article that is currently featured in Lowveld Living Magazine.

“It was such a pleasure, interviewing Jacquie, being at Tanda Tula and meeting in person so many of the people I met reading the book” said Tipping-Woods. “ It’s a great story-love and elephants and adventure- great combination!”

Tanda Tula owners Nina and Don Scott are also fans of the book. “Don read it first” said Nina. He’d be lying in bed, laughing and I kept asking him what was so funny. He just kept saying you have to read it. I did, and I loved it. I think anyone who loves Africa should read it.”

The Gift of an Elephant is available on, and as a paperback and an e-book. The paperback is available in the curio shop at Tanda Tula. Jacquie is currently writing the sequel, tentatively titled Twenty Eight Elephants. Her Tanda Tula staff friends will feature prominently in that book too.

“It has been a huge privilege to be part of the Tanda Tula family” said Gauthier “and I love being able to share some of the wonderful stories from my time with this incredibly special group of people in this magical place .”
