Some Facts About the Mopane Worm

These caterpillars are one of the largest of their kind. They are as thick as a cigar and as long as your finger. The mopane caterpillar will stay on the same tree it hatched on, until the tree becomes completely defoliated.

This worm is considered a real delicacy and is consumed by many people throughout South Africa, forming a large part of their staple diet, which is also due to their nutritional value.

They can be found across Mozambique, Malawi, Botswana, northern South Africa and southern Zimbabwe.

But let’s face it, eating insects and bugs is not exactly everyone’s cup of tea, and the mopane does have other uses. Just like a silkworm, it’s silk can be used to make various garments.
