Scavenger or Hunter?

Somewhere along the way Hyaenas have unfairly been given the reputation as being solely scavengers. They can in fact be very accomplished hunters, the spotted Hyaenas, which are seen in the Timbavati, more so than the Brown Hyaena species.

At Tanda Tula Safari Camp we often see hyaenas scavenging off left over leopard and lion kills, sometimes even challenging these ferocious predators for their meat, and getting away with the prize!

In reserves such as the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, where there are high numbers of leopards and lions, it is easy for hyaenas to scavenge off other cats kills. However, in other areas in Southern Africa where the predator density is lower, these spotted beasts are forced to hunt for themselves.
