How Do Elephants Sleep?

The Tanda Tula guide’s are often asked if elephants lie down to sleep. They do! It is uncommon to see them down on the ground which is why there is so much confusion around this daily activity. Every night adult elephants will spend a few hours lying down and sleeping soundly, and at times they can even be heard gently snoring.

When the temperatures are extremely high elephants can also sometimes be found lying flat on their sides in the middle of the day, most especially the younger calves who use the shade of their mother in which to take a rest. Adults can also doze while standing up, and big bulls are known to often stand leaning against a tree and take a quick nap.

In which ever position you may find them taking a snooze, it is always remarkable to find these enormous animals in such a quiet and still state.
