Jody Cole, one of our many return guests, explains how Scotch helped change the course of her life. This inspiring and beautiful story fills us with absolute joy and pride. It also reminds us that we all have the ability to influence others in a positive and good way. Jody’s amazing story was published recently, and she dropped us a personal note to explain how eternally indebted she is to Scotch.

“Scotch and I met (along with Patrick) many, many years ago when I first traveled to Africa and Tanda Tula with Pat Dewil. It wasn't long before I began coming on my own as a simple and much needed respite from "Life". Fate set it up that I was most often put with Scotch as my guide. He, Patrick and I developed a very sweet friendship.”
“At the time of this story I was in my early 40's. I had already come to Africa and Tanda Tula many, many times. I had grown a passion for the continent and her indomitable spirit and natural wonders. On one particular visit Scotch began asking me to identify some birds. Then he and Patrick tested me with tracks and such during coffee or sundowners. They were impressed and I was proud of myself but thought nothing further of it. Until one afternoon during siesta (I was staying in room #1) I heard footsteps on the path. It was Scotch, "Knock Knock, Judy?” I came out and we sat on the veranda of my tent…”

“We spoke about the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) and guiding. He gave me his printed copy of the FGASA magazine and instructed me to read it. He then made the life changing suggestion to me that I should take a course and consider becoming a guide. I was speechless. This was, and continues to be, the highest of complements I have ever received in my Life. The fact that he took the time to come to me and tell me this still means the world to me…”

"This article hardly touches the depth to which I am indebted to Scotch. I haven't looked back since. I am currently preparing for FGASA's Level 3 (Professional Field Guide) qualification. When I pass, you can expect me to be at Tanda Tula to celebrate with my brother Scotch and his sidekick Patrick!”
