Celebrating Lizzie on World Literacy Day

The 8th September, International Literacy Day, serves as a reminder that currently there are over 700 million illiterate adults worldwide. A shocking statistic, and even more so when we consider that 2 out 3 of these are women. We feel incredibly proud to be involved in an initiative whose aim is to be a part of the solution, by creating opportunities for adults to have access to an education. Lizzie is a perfect example of this. She began attending the Tanda Tula Adult Literacy School at its conception as a completely illiterate adult.

Today at 57, four years later, she can proudly write her own name and read a book. For her, her biggest achievement thus far has been drawing money from an ATM without assistance. This is just a small step towards a life-long gift of personal empowerment and independence.
