Alone By Choice

Contrary to popular belief buffalo are not always found in large herds wandering the open plains.

More often than not you will find a lone male or a small bachelor group. These males have not been left behind or pushed out by the herd due to age or illness as often guests are told, but most of the time it is by choice.

These males are usually in their prime and have in fact forced other males in the herd out so that they can take control of their territory. The areas that they now control have supreme sources of food and water which in turn attract females leading to better mating opportunities.

So the next time you are on safari and see a lone buffalo bull think twice before you take pity on him - he may just be the king of the castle!
