A Civilized Name

When Civilized Nebraska Ngwenya started guiding at Tanda Tula five years ago his name sparked much interest from guests and staff alike. This gentle giant with his deep, kind voice was given the name Civilized by his parents, but he added the Nebraska himself. An odd name choice for a boy from a small village in rural South Africa, right? So we thought we would shed light on the story behind it.

While at school Civilized developed a passion for history, and he and a friend were completely taken with Alaska when they started to delve into this passion and learn about far-flung countries. This was most likely because it was so removed and totally different from the hot, arid Africa where they were growing up. When he discovered that Nebraska means “ beautiful song” he immediately took the name himself, while his friend named himself Wisconsin!
